Traffic warning signs prevent accidents by informing drivers about road and environmental conditions in advance. A sign is effective when it is the right sign, in the right place, with sufficient visibility.
Types of Signs
- Hazard warning signs: announce risks such as curves, bumps, pedestrian crossings and school zones.
- Regulatory signs: state rules such as stop, give way, speed limit and no entry.
- Information signs: provide direction, distance and facility information.
- Work zone signs: announce temporary arrangements at road works.
Reflective Sheeting Classes
The reflective sheeting on the sign face determines visibility. Engineering grade is suitable for low-speed urban roads, high-intensity (HI) for main arterials, and diamond grade (DG) for motorways. Quality printing and UV protection keep the sign legible for years without fading.
Correct Placement
Place the sign before the hazard, allowing for driver reaction distance: at least 50 metres in urban areas and 150 metres or more outside built-up areas. Mounting height should be at least 2.2 metres in pedestrian zones, with the sign face perpendicular to the road and turned toward the driver’s line of sight.
Posts and Mounting
Galvanised omega or tube posts ensure long service life. Use appropriate clamps and fittings calculated for wind load.
