A road stud, commonly known as a cat’s eye, is a small but highly effective traffic safety product mounted on the road surface to keep lane lines visible at night. Its reflectors bounce headlight beams back to the driver, making lane keeping much easier.
Types of Road Studs
- Plastic road studs: economical and light; a common choice for urban roads and car parks.
- Metal (cast aluminium) road studs: resistant to heavy traffic and snow ploughs; used on intercity roads.
- Solar road studs: built-in LEDs switch on automatically at dusk; no cabling required and visible from hundreds of metres.
- Glass cat’s eye models: classic, long-lasting reflective performance.
Where Are They Used?
Along lane lines, at median noses, on junction islands, at tunnel approaches and on the outside of curves. On motorways a colour scheme is applied: white for lanes, amber for the left edge and red for the right edge or hazards. They are also used for vehicle guidance in car parks and residential sites.
Installation Tips
Studs are fixed to a cleaned road surface with epoxy adhesive or with a pinned (shank) system. Standard spacing along a lane line is 9-18 metres on straight sections and 3-6 metres on curves and hazardous sections. For solar models, make sure the panel receives direct sunlight.
